The Ashes Farmhouse
Client : Ensarb Ltd | Location : Endon, Staffordshire
The Ashes is a Grade II* Listed 17th-century Gentleman’s country house and collection of 17th-18th century stone outbuildings and barns which are Grade II Listed in their own right, set in 50 acres of Staffordshire Moorland countryside.
The property required internal alterations to adapt the house suitable for 21st century lifestyles. The farmhouse was extended to the rear with a new contemporary style addition to serve as the family kitchen. The new single-storey kitchen extension is constructed of new coursed, lightly tooled, dressed Hollington sandstone Ashlar with a terne coated stainless steel standing seam roof covering. The extension sits alongside the historic main house as a new contemporary edition and is visually separated by a glazed link, which lightly touches the historic house. To the south side, the extension ‘opens-up’ with a proprietary sliding, folding door system, two thirds the width of the extension with a structural glass roof. Due to the existing ground levels, which fall from west to east, the extension becomes partially buried below ground level, which serves to reduce its visual impact on the west side.
